ECZEMA OR ECZEMA

Eczema is a pathology that is generally very easily recognisable and can be diagnosed on almost all areas of our skin. Moreover, its treatment, depending on the type, is usually simple. However, when it is suffered on the scalp, both circumstances are more difficult: it is more difficult to diagnose and its treatment is much more arduous, especially, as we will see, if we find certain types and circumstances that add to the problem.

What is Eczema or Eczema?

We call eczema both the disease of dermatitis and its main symptom, which is a patch of skin whose characteristics have been altered and have deteriorated.

This alteration can occur over the entire length of the skin and is usually quite long-lasting and occurs more frequently in children, although it is not uncommon in adults.

We found that there are two basic types: atopic and contact (or contact).

There is also the well-known nappy rash, which affects children in the genito-anal area.

We also find seborrhoeic dermatitis or seborrhoeic eczema, which occurs on the scalp as well as on the face.

Finally, neurodermatitis has been introduced as a type because its cause is not physical but neuronal.

Symptoms of eczema

Its symptoms make this problem, as we have already mentioned, easy to diagnose. These include dry, inflamed and reddened skin, itching, vesiculation with its corresponding exudation, crusting (from scratching) and desquamation.

Moreover, its appearance can be periodic, so that we can see how this symptomatology disappears for months or even months, only to be followed by a new, prolonged and variable exacervation.

It is worth mentioning that other symptoms, so to speak (they actually occur in parallel), are asthma and hay fever.

Causes of eczema

The cause of this disease or pathology depends on the type of eczema, and it is in fact the motives that cause us to classify it in one way or another.

  • Atopic dermatitis is caused by ingesting or inhaling allergens.
  • Contact, as we can guess, is produced when we have direct contact with elements that make us react, such as latex, sap, metals...
  • Nappy rash, which is common in babies, occurs in a more "strange" or less related way, so to speak. In this case, we see that the reason is the stagnation of moisture in a situation of prolonged heat.
  • Neurodermatitis has its origin in neuronal problems, mainly stress. What happens is that there is an itch that causes us to scratch automatically until we ourselves cause the alteration of the dermis.

It must be said that, with the exception of nappy rash, the rest are caused by a change in our white blood cells.

Eczema treatment

Eczema has no cure as such. What we do is attack the triggering factor and alleviate the symptoms. This helps to make the active phases much more bearable and the lethargy time much longer.

Some of the drugs prescribed are itch controllers, skin repairers, drugs to stop infection if present, anti-inflammatory drugs (such as dermocorticoids), antibodies and other injectables, antihistamines...

Proper hygiene and hydration, a healthy lifestyle in all senses (including psychological, covering the area if you can't avoid scratching, therapy, wearing natural and comfortable clothing and short showers are excellent complements to prevent and treat eczema.
