SEBACEOUS GLAND

Do you have greasy hair? Maybe it's time to start controlling it because it can end up in a nasty alopecia that is much more difficult to treat. Let's take a look at what sebaceous glands are and how their change affects us and how we can remedy excess oil in our hair.

What is the sebaceous gland and what is its associated disorder?

A sebaceous gland is a small organ made up of lipid or fat cells found in our dermis, i.e. in the skin.

Its function is to regulate sebum, synthesising it so that it lubricate our skin in the right measure. This is constant, but secretion is greater when the hair follicle is in the anagen phase.

They are found all over our body, being larger and more abundant where there is a greater need for sebum, such as the head, chest or part of the back.

The main alteration is seborrhoea. This is a functional disorder which causes much more sebum to be generated than necessary.

This is related to hair loss because, in effect, seborrhoea can lead to baldness as an excess amount of lipids ends up suffocating the hair. In addition, the combination of this problem with fungal infestation (seborrhoeic dermatitis) makes the hair loss process worse. For this reason, it is particularly important to control this sebum so that it does not wreak havoc.

Symptoms of sebaceous gland disorders

The sebum is very easy to see. The hair appears shiny, wet-looking, in its first centimetres, just as if we were applying oil. When the oil oxidises, it also emanates a bad smell. The hair sticks to the scalp and the lipid causes the substances to stick to the scalp, so that dirt is very easily picked up.

It is not a symptom of the problem but it does occur when we wash our hair too much or too little and it is flaking and reddening of the scalp.

Causes of sebaceous gland disorder

This excess fat can occur for many different reasons: excessive consumption of toxic substances such as caffeine, taurine, alcohol, tobacco, etc., intake of too much fat, sedentary lifestyle, stress and/or anxiety and other emotional disorders, a change in hormonal activity, taking diuretic drugs, cholesterol controllers or antibiotics, excessive washing of the hair, use of unsuitable hair products, lack of ventilation, excessive pollution, etc.

Sebaceous gland treatment; can it be cured?

To start treating this problem, the first and foremost thing to do is to treat the cause that is causing our sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum than they should (washing your hair less, changing your diet, reducing the consumption of other toxic elements, substituting medicines and hair products...).

If other problems occur, they can be treated together, be it hair loss, dandruff, etc.
